Kurdish officials gathered at the Police Academy in Suleimaniya province to mourn 730 victims of Iraq's notorious 'Anfal' campaign, whose bodies were discovered in mass graves in southern Iraq in July 2011. Rights groups estimate that up to 180,000 people were killed when Saddam Hussein's troops began a military campaign against Iraq's minority Kurds in 1988, razing villages and rounding up local people, forcing many into camps.
